Semiotics of soviet wedding: new rituals vs tradition
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of processes in the formation of new rituals in Soviet Russia using wedding ceremonies as an example. The authors investigate the influence of political and ideological factors on the creation and development of civil rites, comparing them with the semiotics of traditional religiosity. Special attention is paid to the conflict between attempts to introduce new norms of behavior and preserve cultural traditions of the people, undertaken during late USSR period. The main conclusion of the article is that despite efforts by the state to create a new system of symbols and meanings, many traditional practices continued to exist alongside the new ones, sometimes contradicting each other. This led to the emergence of hybrid forms of rituals combining elements of tradition and pseudo-traditions, creating a unique semiotic system reflecting the complex historical context of the era.
