A Lovejoy’s history of ideas: the theory of human nature in the american constitution
Abstract
The article examines A. Lovejoy's concept of the history of ideas, which consists of isolating and studying unit-ideas which moving through time. It is noted that human nature for him did not act as a unit-idea, but rather as a complex ideas represented by various positions and assessments. It is stated that Lovejoy's main historical purpose was to illustrate the widespread prevalence of a pessimistic assessment of human nature and motives, including among the creators of the American Constitution.
