The article is a historical and pedagogical study of the system of higher pedagogical education in Donbas during the period of 1954–1964. Based on the introduction of archival materials reflecting the activities of pedagogical institutes in the region into scientific circulation, the author examines the key prerequisites for reform and its direct impact on curricula and programs. Special attention is given to a critical analysis of the systemic problems identified during the transformation process, such as the excessive overload of curricula, the high workload of independent student work, and the manifestations of formalism in the organization of the pedagogical process. The research results allow us to assess the effectiveness of the 1958 reform and identify the characteristic contradictions in the development of the Soviet model of pedagogical education at the regional level.
