Abstract

The article deals with a problem of identification of the role and place of classical gymnasium education in the historical development of spiritual culture of Russian society. The conclusion about the crisis of male classical education has been made. There has been proved the idea that classical gymnasium education at the turn of XIX–XX centuries has not exhausted its humanistic potential. To prove this, there has been considered the activity of private classical gymnasiums of the second half of the XIX – the beginning of the XX century (by example of S. Fisher’s Gymnasium) and Russian gymnasiums abroad during the first third of the XX century (by example of the Russian classical gymnasium in Athens). There has been summarized the idea of the possibility of application of historical experience of development of classical education in modern conditions.
